The examination gained more importance during the Goryeo Dynasty , until it became the ultimate achievement of education during the Joseon Dynasty During the Joseon Dynasty, the examinations fell into three broad categories: literary, military, and miscellaneous categories which included subjects like medicine, geography, and translation. In theory, anyone except slaves and the lowest class were allowed to take the exams, but in reality, only those in the upper class had the luxury of spending their childhood studying for the exam. Towards the later years of the Joseon Dynasty, the Gwageo system became increasingly corrupt until it was finally abolished in , along the old rank system. However, the traditions do continue in the form of university entrance exams and civil service examinations today. Starting from differences between reenactment and the more established practice of historical reconstruction, leading practitioners and theorists ask how the notion of preservation and representation associated with reconstruction is transformed by reenactment into historical experience and affective relation to the past in the present. In other terms: How does dance convey historical meaning through sensuous form? Danced reenactment poses the problem of history and historicity in relation to the troubled temporality inherent to dance itself.

Ephemerality as the central trope of dance is hence displaced in favor of dance as a reiterative practice that confounds categories of chronological time and opens up a theoretical space of history that is often invisibilized by ideologies of immediacy traditionally attributed to dancing. The preponderance of the re- in contemporary choreographic creativity points to the operational value of reenactment in dance as synonymous with cultural production itself inasmuch as culture is engaged with the re-appropriation of signs, citationality, and intertextuality.

For example, in most northern European medieval reenactment cotton is an inauthentic material—as opposed to wool or linen—though it would be authentic in more modern periods and events, such as American Civil War reenactment or World War II reenactment.

Generally, the ratio of events and groups enforcing strict authenticity to those permitting limited in authenticity among the participating reenactors is estimated to be half-and-half, i. This does, however, vary from country to country. In the US, reenactors are commonly divided or self-divide into three categories, based on the level of concern for authenticity.

Some, called ” farbs ” or “polyester soldiers” [2] are reenactors who spend relatively little of their time or money maintaining authenticity with regard to uniforms, accessories, or even period behavior. A “good enough” attitude is pervasive among farbs, although even casual observers may be able to point out flaws. The origin of the word “farb” and the derivative adjective “farby” is unknown, though it appears to date to early centennial reenactments in or
