The MOT scheme
From May 20, classic cars that were registered in or earlier may no longer have to undergo the annual roadworthiness test if they are declared to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency DVLA as a historical vehicle. This can include consulting an expert on your particular marque, or a specialist in historic vehicles. If a VHI is deemed to have changed considerably from its original spec then it may still require a roadworthiness test, even if it meets the age criteria for exemption.
If the engine has been changed to one that is different from its original, this is considered a substantial change. One way of identifying this is if the number of cylinders in an engine is different from the original.

The Club provides a number of services to its members, the most popular being the Triumph Motorcycle Dating Service, and the Club Archives. If you have an old Triumph motorcycle that has never been registered, or one that the DVLA do not have any records for, and you wish to retain the original or obtain an age-related registration number plate then you need this service. Back in , the DVLA started computerising vehicle registrations.
Before then registrations were carried out by County Councils or Borough Councils, but Centralised Registration pulled all these records together onto a computerised system. Of course, many registrations were lost or not transfered by the various councils, and when all the old records had finally been entered by about there were still many vehicles that were not on the new register. To apply for a Date Certificate for your Triumph motorcycle you need to get together as much documentation about your machine as possible, and as many photos as you can get your hands on.
As a minimum you should have photos of both sides of the bike, the Engine Number, and the Frame Number. If you have any original Bills of Sale or Service documents then this will make the job much easier. In fact, any dated information you can supply on your machine will make your case that much stronger.

Anyone who has ever tried to register a Lambretta, Vespa or any other scooter for that matter will know the number of hoops that have been set in place over the years by the DVLA. Recently, there has been an upsurge in the number of authentication letters also known as dating certificates that have been rejected because they are over 12 months old. To be honest, the date on a letter never used to be an issue. I asked why this was now the case and was told that the rule had come in as things may have changed with the machine over the 12 months since the letter was issued.

To obtain a dating certificate it is necessary to contact the club archivist via the club website in the first instance, or by using the postal address shown in the list of Club Officers found in Torque, the club magazine. The issuing of a certificate cannot be done via email. Email can only be used for other MDS enquiries.

The original factory records contain a lot of information about the bike including all the basic details such as frame, engine and gearboxes numbers, the exact model of the bike and when it was manufactured. The factory records also contain lots of additional information which may be of interest to the current owner. The majority of the original factory records are still in paper form, but increasingly the club is working to get these into an electronic database to make searching much easier. There is now an online frame dating service available which allows you to search the database for the fare number of your AJS or Matchless motorcycle. This includes the year of manufacture, the make i. AJS or Matchless and model of the bike that the frame was originally part of.
